What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session in Chicago
Your first therapy session is usually 50 to 60 minutes. You’ll talk with your therapist about what brought you in, your background, and your goals. You won’t be pushed to share more than you’re ready to, and you’ll leave with a sense of whether the fit feels right and what comes next.
It is common to feel nervous about booking that first appointment. Not knowing what will happen is often the hardest part. Here’s a clear look at what to expect, so you can walk in feeling more prepared.
How long is a first therapy session, and what happens?
Most first sessions run between 50-60 minutes. The first part usually covers practical basics, like confidentiality, how sessions work, and any additional paperwork. Then your therapist will invite you to talk about what’s bringing you in now. Think of it as a conversation, not a test. There are no right or wrong answers.
What will my therapist ask me?
Expect open, getting-to-know-you questions, such as:
- What’s been going on that made you decide to reach out?
- How long have you been feeling this way?
- How are things at work, at home, and in your relationships?
- What have you tried so far, and what has or hasn’t helped?
- What would you like to be different?
Your therapist may also ask about sleep, stress, and past experiences with therapy. Answer what you can, and say so if you’re not sure.
Do I have to talk about my past right away?
No. You set the pace. Some history is helpful context, but you won’t be pressured to go into painful details before you feel ready. If a question feels like too much, you can say so and that’s completely okay.
What should I bring or prepare?
You don’t need to prepare much, but a few things can help:
- Your questions. Jot down anything you want to know such as: how often sessions are, what approach your therapist uses, or how long therapy might take.
- A few notes on what’s been hard. Even a short list of recent stressors or patterns can help if your mind goes blank.
- Practical items. Bring your ID and insurance information if relevant, and arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
What if I get emotional, or can’t think of anything to say?
Both are normal. Tears, nerves, long pauses, and “I don’t even know where to start” all happen in first sessions. Your therapist is trained to guide the conversation gently, and silence doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
How do I know if a therapist is the right fit?
Research consistently points to the relationship between you and your therapist as an important part of the process, so fit matters. After your first session, you might ask yourself:
- Did I feel listened to and respected?
- Could I imagine being honest with this person over time?
- Did their approach and explanations make sense to me?
- Did I feel safe to be myself?
It isn’t uncommon to need a couple of sessions to decide. It’s also okay to say it isn’t the right match.
If you’re coming in with something specific, such as work stress and burnout, perfectionism and self-esteem, or self-doubt and an inner critic, your therapist can talk with you about how they’d approach it.
If you’re seeking an LGBTQ+ affirming space, see how we approach affirming therapy, and feel free to ask any therapist directly how they support your identity and experiences.
